Dr. Cat Begovic Excess Skin Removal Surgery Procedure
A tummy tuck or abdominoplasty surgery is designed to remove excessive skin and fat as a result of weight gain or pregnancy. These conditions often cannot be improved with diet or exercise especially if there is a lot of skin and underlying muscles have been stretched. Even some of the thinnest patients have excessive skin that a tummy tuck can help with.
I take a complete medical history and conduct a careful examination to evaluate your anatomy and overall health. I consider age, obesity, smoking habits, and previous surgeries when evaluating a candidate for this procedure. Abdominoplasty surgery is most commonly performed by making a gentle curved incision from hip to hip. I encourage my patients to bring an underwear or bikini bottom they want to wear so I can try to hide the incision under it. A second incision is made around the belly button to free it. The skin and fat flap is then lifted off the abdominal wall, exposing loose tissues and separated abdominal muscle. Loose, stretched out muscles are tightened with sutures, and excess skin and fat are removed. The skin is lowered over the abdomen and the new belly button is reconstructed. I consider the belly button to be one of the most important parts of the tummy tuck. I take extra time to make a beautiful oval shaped natural looking “innie” belly button – this involves several sutures that tether the belly button to the underlying muscle as well as thinning the fat around it to make a nice dip above it. The incisions are then sutured together. Most of my patients feel back to normal at around 1 week after their tummy tuck and are usually off prescription pain medication after a day.
My patient today is a 49 year old mom and grandmother who has had 4 children resulting in excess skin with stretch marks and loosening of the abdominal wall and muscles. This surgery will help restore her abdominal muscles, remove and tighten her excess skin and allow her to fit in her clothing more comfortably. I believe abdominoplasty is one of the most life changing and dramatic surgeries I perform and it gives me so much joy to have the privilege of performing these transformations on my patients.
