The Life of a Female Plastic Surgeon
It takes a lot of unglamorous work on the road to a glamorous career.” Since it’s Monday and following my IG tradition, I love starting it off with some inspiration with the hope that it may help at least one person get through the week with whatever they are doing or going through. Since so many people tell me that I’m so lucky to have such a glam job and career, I really needed to clarify a few things.
Number one, yes I do feel lucky and privileged to be doing what I absolutely love the most – helping my patients achieve their aesthetic goals and helping them feel happier and more confident. Second, the road has been everything but glamorous. I spent most of my life studying and taking extensive exams always giving up weekends and vacations to do extra work to get ahead. My 8 years of surgical residency involved me working all day and night waking up at 4:30 in the morning to do cases all day and spending all night in the ER with emergencies and consults.
Even now being in my plastic surgery practice in Beverly Hills, 50% of the time it’s still not glamorous. I’m an entrepreneur, the administrator of my business with all its associated paperwork, and on call 24/7 for my patients. It has been a hard and long road getting where I am and it’s a lot of work every day but the light in my life is operating and taking care of my amazing patients. My special relationships that I have with them and the immense gratification and appreciation I have for being able to improve their lives makes all the hard times worth it. For those who are thinking of a career in surgery or plastic surgery, do it only because you truly love it and because you truly believe it’s your calling in life. If you are doing it for the money, the idea of having the title, the glamour, or any other reason, it is not meant for you. The moral of the story is – the grass is greener where you water it and to be a true winner in life you need to focus on yourself, what’s best for you, and what you feel is your passion and love. Happy Monday and have a rocking week ahead.
